Construction Begins on UBB Miners Memorial

WHITESVILLE- The Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group announced on Wednesday that construction has begun on the Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial. "We have been looking forward to this day since we formed nearly a year ago," said group president, Sheila Combs. "It's exciting to break ground on the project but it's also a bittersweet moment as we are reminded again of the loss that this memorial represents."

UBB Miners Memorial Receives Major Pledge from Alpha Natural Resources

WHITESVILLE, WV- The Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group announced it received a major pledge for the proposed UBB Miners Memorial from Abingdon, VA based coal producer Alpha Natural Resources. At a meeting with the memorial group, CEO Kevin S. Crutchfield pledged to match the first $250,000 raised and Alpha's support in building the memorial. The total estimated cost of the memorial project is $500,000.

UBB Miners Memorial Receives First Major Corporate Gift

On Tuesday May 10th, the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group received the first major contribution to the Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial from Martin Engineering. After contacting Sheila Combs President of the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group and researching the proposal for the memorial the company's Board decided to contribute $25,000. "We are very pleased to hear that Martin Engineering is the first to offer support for this worthwhile project", said Edwin H. Petersen chairman of the board for Martin Engineering.

Ceremony for the 3rd Anniversary of the Disaster on April 5th, 2013.

In remembrance of the third anniversary of the Upper Big Branch Coal Mine Disaster and the lives lost there, a wreath will be placed at the UBB Miner’s Monument early Friday morning, April 5th, 2013. Instead of a public ceremony this year, the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group encourages family, friends and the community to visit the Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial to remember and reflect in your own way and at your own time.
